Most ankle sprains are mild and recover quickly allowing you to return to sport within a few weeks but more severe sprains can take up to 3 months to fully recover. Rehabilitation with a Physiotherapist at the One Life Clinic can help get you back to sport but also prevent re-injury by working on strength and balance specific to your sport or activity.
What does a consultation involve?
- An initial consultation takes about 40 minutes. We will first take a detailed history about your ankle, activities and general health
- You will have a physical assessment of your ankle and will need to remove your outer clothing for this
- You will have a tailored management plan for your ankle sprain
- We will support referral for any further investigations or onward assessment with a consultant if needed. We will also liaise with your GP or other health professionals if required
Ankle Injuries
Lateral Ligament Sprains
The most common injury of the ankle is a lateral ligament sprain which occurs when you ‘roll’ your ankle inwards from walking on uneven ground or landing awkwardly playing sport such as netball or basketball and damages the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. You usually feel pain and may notice swelling or bruising on the outside of the ankle around the bony prominence called the lateral malleolus.
Self Help Tip
We are often asked about wearing ankle supports, and in all honesty, once you have recovered from an injury and fully strengthened your ankle you shouldn’t need to wear one. A support whilst playing sport can help with proprioception so you feel more confident in ‘trusting’ your ankle but it’s still important to keep working on strength – try cleaning your teeth whilst standing on the affected leg to help improve your balance and control!
